It's interesting, hope is so easily and often brought up in discussions about politics but it's frustrating how regularly it's only a rhetorical commitment. Hope is central to so much of what's right and crucial about public life and community but it can be abused so readily.

You're right dreams are where great efforts begin. So here's to doing the work that it takes to make hope real.

I just came across your article praising Al Sharpton and I am wondering where you have been. Al Sharpton calls Greeks "Homos" in one public speech. Al Sharpton calls Jews by code names like "Diamond Merchants" in a successful attempt to incite a riot in Crown Hights in another public speech. Sharpton incited a riot in Crown Hights where participants screamed "Kill The Jews, Kill All The Jews" Al Sharpton incited one of the worst riots in New York City in the history of the 20th century at Freddys on 125th St. Days of rioting. Millions of dollars in losses for the largest Black congregation in Harlem. Sharpton's followers screaming "Burn Jew, Burn". "Burn The Jews". A protestor went into the store and shot and murdered all of the white people, lit and lit them and the building on fire. Eight murders on that morning of Sharpton induced rioting, and millions in black owned real estate burned to the ground. Yakle Rosenbaum's murder where Sharpton said "Tell the Jews if they want to fight to pin there yalmulkes on the back of their heads and come on over to my house". Sharpton went on National TV and said that 46 white Duke Lacroisse players raped a prostitute, 10 days after all 46 of the players DNA tests proved there was none of their DNA found in the woman, even though there were at least 6 other different samples of DNA recovered from her, none of which were from these totally innocent kids. Sharpton called Mormons not christian and said that God would take care of Mitt Romney's candidacy. He said all Mormons can't be Christians. He falsly accused several men of rape in the Tawana Brawley case. All law enforcement agencies found Tawana and Sharpton to be lying. The courts found Sharpton to be a liar and ordered him to pay thousands and thousands of dollars to these falsely accused people. So this is your hero. This is the person that you chose to condem Don Imus.

While it is admirable that Lou Dobbs is talking about the need for civility, I consider his unsubstantiated allegations that the only reason the Catholic bishop in L.A. supports immigrant rights including for undocumented workers is to fill his pews and his coffers to be far from civil. Sometimes it is easier to know what to do than to actually do it.

Mr. Dobbs's lack of understanding that Christians are called to look after "the least of these" and to treat the alien living in our land as well as the person born here is surprising in one of his breadth of knowledge and experience. I've emailed Mr. Dobbs suggesting that he should meet with that bishop rather than criticize him from afar.

Rob, you are right in saying that differences enrich a conversation, but wouldn't you agree that if the uncivil speech degrades another, that crosses a boundary line that is unproductive for the conversation? I think disagreements and different points of view should be mandatory because it helps all sides to stretch our minds a bit. But I can't see how uncivil speech helps when it degrades somebody else. That causes the other to hit right back and it's not helpful. Let's work together to develop better ways to state our differences and then we all learn from each other.

Let me preface this by saying I have never read nor have Read Anne Coulter tracks. The only point that I actually heard something from her mouth was when she was one a talk show. What Coulter said wasn't as interesting as one of the her fans. the fan said that she was challenged by one other friend why she read Coulter books and she responded that that the fan's mother use to said eat the meat and spit out the bone. this is what the fan what did with Anne's writing.
Why I found this interesting was because some reasons. First it was far form a ringing endorsement. Admitting that there was bone you had to admit a some point what Anne said was unusable. As I though about this I can maybe incorrectly but still came to troubling insight. This ability to accept some of argument, the meat, and not the total is foundational principle to civility . Without understanding we have to accept or reject in total. However sadly the market place of Ideas, the media dose not accept this nuanced understand. A book seller, and i rightly think so should not concern him or herself with the Idea in the book more his or her aim ought to be to sell as many books, as possible. It falls a on the reader or the writer to reject the the idea. The reader won't because he or she should get as much information as possible before making a judgment an idea ergo bye and read the book. The writer won'treject the idea because the more earthy the language the more it sells.

This is some way is iteration of the Paradox of civility: To have a civil culture you must have a free speech and thought. To have free though and speech and though you must be willing to some uncivil speech and though.
